Research interest

"Generating healthy soils for people, food, nature and the climate"

EU Soil Strategy for 2030

Our research contributes to protecting Mediterranean horticultural soils by increasing organic carbon content, promoting soil biodiversity and increasing soil resilience potential against environmental stressors.

We work on the following priority lines:

  1. Generation of frontier knowledge in the field of biochar technology.

  2. Development of emerging technologies (biochar bioactivation, plastic waste management), use of insects for biomass production.

  3. Promotion of I+D+i business activities.

  4. Food safety and quality, productive and sustainable agriculture and sustainability of natural resources (sustainable horticulture).

  5. Climate action, circular economy, efficiency of raw materials and resources.

Terrestrial Ecotoxicology

Use of earthworms in the environmental risk assessment of pesticides through toxicity testing, biomarkers and field monitoring.

Biochar Technology

Investigation of materials susceptible to transformation to biochar as a waste recovery strategy framed in the circular economy

Microplastic Research

Use of insect larvae as models to explore microplastic toxicology, and production of biochar from plastic-containing insect frass.
